The shops in Xiamen are spread all around the city and many of the shopping districts and local food stores are tucked away, lining the alleyways and back streets. One of the main shopping attractions in Xiamen is the extremely lively and colourful night market, which takes place at Ding'an Lu, located between both Zhenhai Lu and also Zhingshan Lu.

Almost all shops in Xiamen are open seven days a week, with some opening as early as 08:00 or 08:30. However, most shops tend to open their doors between 09:00 and 10:00, remaining open until late into the evening, finally closing at 21:00 or 22:00. There are of course exceptions to this late-night shopping and some do close considerably earlier, at 17:00 or 18:00.

No shopping trip in Xiamen is really complete without paying a trip to one or more of the countless markets and bazaars that are spread around the city and contain plenty of gift ideas and various souvenirs, although the quality of goods can vary considerably between vendors. Some of the best markets are situated in the Longtou area, on the Gulangyu Island and also along Xiahe Lu.

Many of the best shops in Xiamen line Zhongshan Lu and include fashion boutiques specialising in designer goods, jewellers and even some discount factory outlets. Several enormous department stores are also situated in central Xiamen and the best two are shown below.

The No.1 Department Store has a special place with locals in Xiamen, since it is the city's most historic department store. With floors devoted to clothing, electrical goods, groceries and more besides, this is one not to miss, although parking nearby can be problematic.
